What 4K actually costs you in size and time, and which codec your player can handle.

How do I know if a video is really available in 4K?
Fetch it and look. If the uploader published at 2160p, a 2160p row appears. If the highest row is 1080p, no 4K master exists and no tool anywhere can produce one - anything claiming to "upscale to 4K" is inventing pixels.
Why are the 4K files so large?
Four times the pixels of 1080p. Expect roughly 300–400 MB for ten minutes, and several gigabytes for a feature-length upload. Because the file is built on the server before it is sent, very large 4K downloads can take a minute or two before your browser shows any progress.
Why is my 4K download a WebM file?
Above 1080p, YouTube overwhelmingly uses VP9 and AV1 rather than H.264, and those live in WebM containers. Where an MP4 row exists at 2160p it is usually AV1 inside an MP4 wrapper. Both are modern codecs; both need a reasonably current player.
My 4K file will not play. What do I do?
Use VLC, which decodes VP9 and AV1 on every platform. Windows Media Player, QuickTime and older TVs often cannot. If you need guaranteed compatibility over resolution, download the 1080p H.264 row instead.
Do I need a 4K monitor for this to be worth it?
Not necessarily. Even downscaled to a 1080p screen, a 4K source looks slightly cleaner because it carries far more detail and less compression noise. It is also the right choice if you intend to crop or zoom in an editor.
Can I get 8K?
If the uploader published at 4320p, it will be listed. It is rare, the files are enormous, and playback needs a genuinely powerful machine.
