FAQ

Downloading on macOS

QuickTime is fussier than you might expect. Here is how to avoid a file that will not open.

Why will QuickTime not play my download?
QuickTime only handles a narrow set of codecs - essentially H.264 and HEVC in an MP4 or MOV. It cannot play VP9 or AV1, which is what most WebM rows contain and what YouTube uses above 1080p. Download the MP4 / H.264 row, or open the file in VLC instead.
What is the best format for a Mac?
MP4 with H.264. It plays in QuickTime, imports into Photos, iMovie and Final Cut without transcoding, streams to an Apple TV over AirPlay, and decodes in hardware so it barely touches your battery.
Do I get a Gatekeeper or "unidentified developer" warning?
No. Those appear when you open an application from outside the App Store. Nothing here is an application - you are downloading a video file, which macOS treats the same as any other download.
Where do files save by default?
To ~/Downloads in both Safari and Chrome. In Safari you can change it under Settings › General › File download location, including "Ask for each download".
Will 4K downloads play smoothly on my Mac?
On Apple Silicon, yes - the media engine decodes 4K H.264 and HEVC in hardware without effort. On older Intel Macs, 4K VP9 or AV1 is decoded in software and can stutter or spin up the fans. Choosing 1080p H.264 is the comfortable option there.
Can I download straight to iCloud Drive?
Yes. Point your browser's download location at a folder inside iCloud Drive and the file syncs to your other devices automatically once the transfer completes.
