Downloading on Android

Storage, players, and why sideloading a downloader app is a bad idea.

Why not just install a downloader APK?
Because downloader APKs are not on the Play Store, which means sideloading from a site with no review process and granting storage permissions to unvetted code. This category of app has a long history of bundled adware. A web page needs no permissions at all.
Where do downloaded files go?
To /storage/emulated/0/Download, which every file manager shows as "Downloads". Most Android builds index new videos into Gallery or Google Photos within a minute or two.
The video will not play in my gallery app. Why?
You most likely downloaded a WebM or AV1 file, and the stock gallery on some devices only handles H.264. Either install VLC, which plays everything, or download the MP4 / H.264 row instead - the codec is shown next to the container in the table.
Will this use a lot of mobile data?
It uses exactly the size shown in the table, which is why the size is shown before you commit. On mobile data prefer 480p or 720p; a 1080p download of a long video can easily run past a gigabyte.
Can I download in the background?
Yes. Chrome continues downloading while you switch apps or lock the phone, and reports progress in the notification shade. Battery optimisation on some manufacturers' builds can pause it - if downloads keep stalling, exclude Chrome from battery optimisation.
Does this work in Firefox or Samsung Internet?
Yes. Any modern Android browser with its own download manager behaves the same way, including Firefox, Samsung Internet, Brave and Opera. Samsung Internet saves to the same Downloads folder as Chrome, while Firefox keeps its own download list under the toolbar menu.
