Where files go on an iPhone, and how to get them into your camera roll.

Where does the file actually go?
To the Downloads folder inside the Files app, which lives on your iPhone unless you have set Safari to save to iCloud Drive. You can change the destination in Settings › Safari › Downloads.
How do I get the video into my Photos app?
Open Files, find the video in Downloads, tap and hold it, then choose Share followed by Save Video. It then appears in Photos like anything you recorded yourself. Videos do not go to Photos automatically, because Safari saves to the file system rather than the photo library.
Do I need Shortcuts or a third-party app?
No. Shortcuts-based downloaders were a workaround from before iOS had a download manager. Since iOS 13, Safari handles this natively and nothing needs to be installed or sideloaded.
Which format should I pick on an iPhone?
An MP4 with H.264, which iOS decodes in hardware and plays everywhere including AirPlay and the Photos app. Avoid WebM and VP9 rows - iOS cannot play them in Photos or QuickTime, though VLC for iOS can.
Why did my download stop when I locked the screen?
Safari suspends downloads when the device sleeps during a long transfer. Keep the screen on until a large merged file finishes, or pick a smaller format. Setting Auto-Lock to Never in Display & Brightness for the duration helps.
Does this work on iPad?
Yes, identically. iPadOS uses the same Safari download manager and the same Files app layout.
